1st XI vs Read 1st X1 (a)
T20
Friday 23 May 2025

The First XI kicked off their Birtwistle Cup campaign at Read, eager for a strong start to the competition.

After winning the toss, we chose to bat, and our openers delivered a blistering start with a 91-run partnership. Jordon Kelly was the first to depart, having smashed a rapid 51 off just 30 balls—including five sixes - setting the tone for the innings. Professional opener Amin then anchored the middle overs, taking the score to 132 before falling for 24. Ryan Canning (9) followed at 146, while Amin’s solid knock of 61 (featuring two sixes) ended at 163. A late flourish from Waqar Rafique (35*) and Mack Spencer guided us to a competitive total of 198/4.

In reply, Read came out swinging. Their openers proved unstoppable, chasing down our total in just 16.5 overs with an aggressive display - hitting 11 sixes and 15 fours between them. Their only wicket fell at 72, leaving our bowlers with few answers on the day.

Despite the result, there were positives to take forward. Our opening pair showcased an exciting, attacking approach - a promising sign for the remaining T20 fixtures. With sharper execution in the field and with the ball, we’ll look to bounce back stronger in the next match

1st XI vs. Barnoldswick 1st XI (h)
Saturday 24th May 2025

The return of the previously unbeaten Barnoldswick to Church Meadow - fresh off our Hamer Cup triumph the week prior - presented an opportunity to build crucial momentum in the League. Though the weather had shifted, the stage was set for the first team to shine once again.

After winning the toss and electing to field, Ian Britcliffe struck early, leaving Barnoldswick at 7-1. His namesake, Jordan Britcliffe, then made quick work of the top order, reducing them to 28-2 before tearing through the middle with a devastating spell that left the visitors reeling at 66-5. Despite a brief recovery, Barnoldswick lost their sixth wicket at 100, and disciplined bowling soon had them struggling at 116-9. Jordan Britcliffe was exceptional, finishing with figures of 5-58 from a relentless 15-over spell. A late 10th-wicket stand of 58 provided some resistance, but Ian Britcliffe returned to wrap up the innings at 174, securing two valuable extra bowling points.

In reply, the rapidly blossoming opening partnership of Hammad Amin (32) and Jordan Kelly (39) got off to a flying start, racing to 75 in quick time - Kelly even launching two massive sixes into the Brownlow Street "stand." Their dismissals triggered a minor stumble, with Waqar Raffique (5) and the Pro (11) falling cheaply, leaving us at 97-4. Enter Mack Spencer, who has embraced his new role at number five with composure, bringing much-needed stability to the middle order. Supported by Abrar Hussain (18), he guided the score to 130-5 before a brief wobble saw us slip to 131-7. However, Mike Worthy joined Spencer in a calm and collected partnership, steering the chase home with a flurry of boundaries. Spencer remained unbeaten on 39, sealing a well-earned victory.

This was a complete team performance, filled with standout contributions, culminating in a thoroughly deserved win.

2nd XI vs. Read 2nd XI (h)
Sunday 25th May 2025

The Seconds welcomed Read to Church Meadow for the second round of the Ramsbottom Cup.

After winning the toss, Read elected to field - a decision that initially paid off as our openers fell cheaply. Tandy (4) was the first to go at 7/1, followed by skipper Blezard (3) at 20/2. When Mack Burgess (3) departed at 24/3, the innings was in trouble. However, Andrew Hutchins anchored a superb recovery, first in a 68-run partnership with Mathew Brett (18) and then a 42-run stand with Scott Fielding (14). Hutchins' commanding innings came to an end at 161/6, but his brilliant 84 runs off 110 balls had put us in a strong position. A late surge lead by Luke Spencer took the final total to a competitive 179/6 off 40 overs!

Read’s chase never gained momentum, as they lost three quick wickets for just 24 runs. The pressure never relented with Spencer and Kerr picking up one wicket each then Jack Fielding collecting two wickets Read were eventually bowled out for 65 in 27.1 overs. The bowlers delivered a disciplined performance, with Graeme Kershaw (8-2-21-3) and Travis Blezard (6-1-21-3) leading the way.

An emphatic 114 run victory sees the Seconds march into the quarter-finals of the Ramsbottom Cup in style.
